Time and time again I cringe at the fact that this category is all about mistaking supportive acting with supportive, nurturing characters. But these characters do exist and they can be well portrayed on screen, and when it happens praises should be given, and this year, in Fricker's performance we have one of the best earth mothers this category's ever seen. I'm happy she won and since the other nominee I'm going to champion here is one I've already bestowed with my vote twice, I'm going here with the Academy's choice. I like Julia Roberts. I know better, but I do. And I think that one career nomination (for Brockovich) should have been a nice recognition of her very limited, yet sometimes very engaging, gifts. Other than that, I don't think she belongs in races dealing with profound acting. As for new faces that year, I'd go for her Pretty Women costar San Giacomo, who back then was quite refreshing, or even better, Winona Ryder, who was totally believable as the wide eyed child bride in Great Balls of Fire. I like Dianne Wiest too, and in this case it is based on real acting ability, which is always evident in whatever movie she's in, including Parenthood. But it's not one of the most outstanding achievements of her career. It was not even her best one of '89. Her turn in Cookie, on the other hand, is.
